Lilac LaRoux is the daughter of the richest man in the universe. On the flight in the Icarus the first ever hyperspeed Spaceship, which is build by her fathers company, she meets Tarver Merendsen. Tarver is on a promotion tour as one of the youngest Majors and war heros. When the luxury spaceliner Icarus starts shaking and suddenly plummets from hyperspace into the nearest planet, Lilac and Tarver are the only survivors.
In their search for help they travel a lonley planet. But things change when they find out that there is more on this planet, and what the truth is.

I loved this book! Good stories set in space always intrigue me, because let's be honest here, I always wanted to live on a space station, like Zenon from that long ago Disney movie - has anyone else loved that movie as much as me!? So when I first heard about 'These Broken Star' I knew i need to read this. The whole concept of terraforming planets to make them able to live on is so cool, and the way Amie Kaufman and Megan Spooner can paint pictures in my head with their words just hooked me on this series.
Once again this book is written from two perspectives, but the voices are so different, so I never had an issue with forgetting who is taking right now. Tarver and Lilac are both very strong characters, who are forced to work together to survive, and let me tell you that's a lot of fun to witness. We get to know them very well during their journey, and half way into the book I couldn't put it down anymore because I felt so strongly for those two.
I would have liked a little bit more space adventure and I really hope we see some more of Tarver and Lilac in book 3 as they just appear shortly in book 2.
And because I already mentioned book 2 now let's jump to that one!

Jubilee Chase is captain of the forces, stationed on Avon, a planet who is stuck in its terraforming stage of swamps and clouds. The military tried for more than a decade to bring down the Rebillion of Avons Natives.
Flynn Cormac has Rebellion in his blood. Terraforming corporations make their fortune by recruiting colonists to make the inhospitable planets livable, with the promise of a better life for their children. But they never fulfilled their promise on Avon.
When Lee and Flynn cross paths he captures her as a prisoner and brings her back to base, to get Information out of her.
But as his fellow rebels prepare to execute this tough-talking girl with nerves of steel, Flynn makes another choice that will change him forever. He and Lee escape the rebel base together, caught between two sides of a senseless war.

'This Shattered World' is the second book in the Starboard series, but feels more like a companion novel, which adds to the bigger picture. You just want to know what the hack LRI is doing. Jubilee and Flynn make digging into this secret so much fun. Although one could assume that when the second book is also written from two perspectives, a young man and a young women, and once again taking place more on a not entirely terraformed planet, than in space, this story has to be similar to the first one, let me assure you it's not. The wonderful two writers created a brand new setting, of which we heard in the first book but couldn't understand. Flynn and Jubilee let us glimpse into other parts of the universe as well. They fight for their rights and freedom and that Irish stubbornness from Flynn is so heart wrecking.
After reading book 2 I have to say this is probably one of my most loved series of all time. The setting is epic. The characters are epic. The writing is epic. This series has all what you can want from a YA sic-fi/romance novel.
I am so excited for 'This fractured light' book 3, which comes out at the end of this year - yeah! And a week ago I also read the free e-short story 'This Night so Dark' which is available on Scribd.com.
I hope LRI is getting its butt kicked in book 3!
And now, go out people and buy these awesome books! ;D

Cheers,
Katha
